<%response.setContentType("text/html");%> Salary Trends 01/2012 Report on Manpower Situation of the Hong Kong Retail Industry – Salary Trends for 2011

The Association conducts the Salary Trends Survey on a yearly basis to consolidate the latest salary trends of frontline and managerial staff of the Hong Kong’s retail industry.

About the Survey

  1. This Survey was conducted in July-September 2011 with a total of 100 companies participated, involving 5,380 retail outlets and over 99,630 staff.
  2. The latest salary data was collected from 3 frontline positions, namely, Sales Persons, Store Supervisors, and Store Managers, and 2 managerial positions including Area/District Managers and Retail/Operations Managers.
  3. The participating companies were categorized into 10 types of retail businesses including Beauty/Cosmetic, Catering/Food, Department Stores, Electronic & Electrical Appliances/Telecommunications, Fashion & Accessories, Furniture & Home Accessories, Personal Health Care/Drug Stores, Specialty Stores, Supermarkets/Convenience Stores, and Watch & Jewellery.

Survey Highlights

  1. Around 92% of the participating companies gave salary increase to their staff in 2011.
  2. Among the 5 positions, Retail/Operations Managers registered the highest rate of increase in average salary in 2011. The Department Stores sector particularly offered the highest average salary increase to Retail/Operations Managers.
  3. The Average Commissions recorded rises for Store Managers, Area/District Managers and Retail/Operations Managers. For Sales Persons and Store Supervisors, there were double digit decreases in Average Commissions.
  4. The Average Guaranteed Bonus for Area/District Managers recorded double digit increases, while those of the other 4 positions were decreased.
  5. The Average Working Hours per Day for frontline staff including Sales Persons, Store Supervisors and Store Managers were between 8.8 to 8.9 hours, the same as compared to last year.
